Ottawa, ON – Rockland's Mikael Mogues hit a two-run shot to walk off the Ottawa Champions 7-5 Thursday night.
After a miraculous error by Boulders' left fielder Joe Maloney allowed the Champions to tie the game in the ninth, Mogues sent the home crowd happy after a long ten-inning ballgame.
Garrett Cortright (L, 1-2) picked up the loss after pitching 1.1 innings in relief. Meanwhile Rockland's Matt Kostalos (W, 5-2) got the win after pitching a scoreless tenth.
The Champions began the game with two runs over the first two innings. Tyson Gillies had an RBI single in the first and Ryan Brockett hit a sac fly in the second.
Rockland responded in the bottom half with a run of their own thanks to a RBI single off the bat of Daniel Arribas. It was 2-1 after two.
After a quiet top half to the fourth inning, the rain began to pour down forcing a thirty-minute delay.
When play resumed the Boulders managed to get two runs off Phillippe Aumont, who stayed in the game after the delay.
Jared McDonald struck for another Boulder's run in the fifth increasing their lead to 4-2.
However, it didn’t take the Champions long to get those runs back as they connected for two runs chasing Boulders' starter Ari Kaufman out of the game. After a fielder's choice knocked in one run, Danny Grauer ripped an RBI double to tie the game.
In the seventh, Joe Maloney launched his league-leading 23rd homerun of the year on to the short porch in right field. The homer gave the Boulders a 5-4 lead.
That was it for Aumont who went seven innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out seven Boulders. He threw 123 pitches during his outing but ended up with a no-decision.
Things looked bleak for the Champions, as they got down to their last out in the ninth inning. With Gustavo Pierre, who reached on a leadoff single, on at first base, Ryan Brockett hit a pop fly into left field. Joe Maloney settled under it for the potential game ending out but dropped it.
Wet conditions throughout the game resulted in miscues on several throws and dropped balls. However, the error worked in Ottawa's favour and Pierre rounded the bases to tie the game.
After a scoreless top half of the tenth the Boulders walked it off in the bottom half.
The two teams will square off again on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm.
