Former Champions Ace Gets Big League Call
Ottawa, ON – Former OTTAWA CHAMPIONS ace RHP WILMER FONT has had his contract purchased and been called up by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
FONT, 27, has been arguably the best pitcher in the Pacific Coast League this year, going 10-8 and with a league leading 3.42 ERA and 178 strikeouts for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The La Guaira, Venezuela native was also named the starting pitcher for the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game and was voted PCL Pitcher of the Year.
Font made 31 appearances (29 starts) over two seasons for Ottawa in 2015 and 2016, compiling a 12-6 record with a 3.76 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 177 innings pitched.
“I’m delighted to hear the news that Wilmer has been called up,” says Champions manager Hal Lanier. “You have to give him a lot of credit for coming to independent baseball and working his way back up.
“[Former Champions pitching coach] Billy Horn deserves a lot of credit too for helping him change his delivery and make him a more effective starter.”
His contract was purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2016 and he pitched as high as Triple-A Buffalo before electing free agency and signing with Los Angeles in the off-season.
This won’t be Font’s first time in a Major League uniform, as he appeared in five games in 2012 and 2013 with the Texas Rangers.
Font is one of five players with big league experience to have suited up for the Champions, but the first to make it back after playing for the team.
