Champions Sign Canadian Gillies, Place Bistagne on Waivers
Ottawa, ON – The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have signed Canadian OF TYSON GILLIES to a contract for the 2017 season and placed 2B BRIAN BISTAGNE on irrevocable waivers.
GILLIES, 28, split the 2016 season between the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League and the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association, where he slashed a combined .254/.326/.402 with four homeruns and 21 RBI in 60 total games.
The Vancouver, BC native attended the Champions open tryout on May 5th and received and invitation to spring training. He has been working out with the team since the start of training camp.
Gillies was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2006 draft, and was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with RHP Phillippe Aumont in the 2009 deal that sent Cliff Lee to Seattle.
He played as high as Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the Phillies organization and was a member of Team Canada at the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
BISTAGNE, 29, played in 17 games for Ottawa in 2017, slashing .203/.297/.266 with one homerun, seven RBI, and eight stolen bases in eight attempts.
The Glendale, CA native was acquired by the Champions in a trade with Sioux City in April, following the retirement of Albert Cartwright.
