Champions finish preseason on high note, beat Cornwall 19-0
Six Champions batters had multi hit games in the lopsided win.
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Champions wrapped up their preseason a perfect 3-0 ahead of their opening day game against the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Friday. Ottawa beat the Cornwall River Rats of the NCBL by a score of 19-0.
“It doesn’t matter who’s on the mound, you still have to barrel up the ball,” said Champions manager Hal Lanier following the game. “Everyone through the lineup hit the ball hard at least one time, and that’s what we wanted to do.”
The performance by the Ottawa hitters can be described as nothing short of dominant. Six players had multi-hit days, and Steve Brown was the only Champion not to score a run, despite going 3-for-4. The most impressive displays came from leadoff man Coco Johnson (4-for-5, three runs scored and a solo home run) and Vinny Guglietti (4-for-4, three extra base hits).
“[Guglietti] has gotten some quality at-bats,” said Lanier of his first baseman’s preseason performance. “He’s got a great swing and a good idea of the strike zone. But, we start Friday 0-0. We’re excited we got through the three games without any major injuries.”
Lanier said he was satisfied with the Champions pitchers, but thought a few of them threw too many pitches. Three Ottawa hurlers saw their first action of the spring, with Steve Borkowski, Ryan Leach and Evan Rutckyj making their debuts.
The Champions will now look to carry their hot play into the regular season. They will start a three-game homestand against the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Friday, May 18 and then welcome the New Jersey Jackals for a three-game set starting on Victoria Day (May 21).
