Ottawa, ON – Even without their short porch in right field, the Rockland Boulders had no trouble running up the scoreboard on a cold and rainy Monday night at RCGT Park.
Boulders batters rapped out eight hits and took advantage of nine walks as they routed the Ottawa Champions 8-0 in the opener of a three game series.
Rockland starter Markus Solbach (W, 3-0) was just as good as his hitters, allowing only three hits and striking out two in an efficient seven inning winning effort.
Neither team was able to push a run across until the sixth inning when the Boulders finally broke through against Champions starter Steve Borkowski.
Mike Fransoso led off the inning with a walk and after advancing to third on a Marcus Nidiffer single, was able to score on a double off the left field wall by Aaron Wilson.
It was the first official at-bat of the game for Wilson after he replaced Joe Maloney, who fouled a ball off his face in the third inning.
After a groundout and a walk, Joe Bennie extended Rockland’s lead to 3-0 with a two-run single up the middle, and Alex Herceg made it 4-0 with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Borkowski (L, 1-3) left after six innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking six in taking the loss.
Alex Luna took over in the seventh and the Boulders promptly blew the game open, scoring four runs on three hits and two walks to take an 8-0 lead.
Ottawa and Rockland continue their series with a 7:05 pm start on Tuesday at RCGT Park. Yean Carlos Gil (0-1, 3.78 ERA) starts for the Champions while the Boulders send C.J. Riefenhouser (1-1, 3.21 ERA) to the hill.
