Champions Acquire Rookie Reliever from Rockland, Release Tulley
Ottawa, ON – The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have acquired RHP ALEX VARGAS from the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. In a corresponding move, the Champions also released another rookie pitcher, RHP MATT TULLEY.
VARGAS, 23, is a relief pitcher inked by Rockland on August 4. He appeared in four games for the first-place Boulders, posting a 0.00 ERA in three and two-thirds innings pitched. The Freeport, NY native also struck out three batters and walked six in a Boulders uniform.
He also pitched in two games against the Champions on August 4 and 5, posting two scoreless innings.
TULLEY, 23, was signed by the Champions on June 22, making four starts and seven appearances. He pitched in 24 and two-thirds innings, striking out 11 and walking 17 in his month-and-a-half stint in Ottawa.
The UMass-Boston graduate was one of three Champions pitchers to win the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week award in July.
