Lanier back as Champions manager in 2018
OTTAWA—Hal Lanier will return for a fourth season at the helm of the Ottawa Champions, team owner Miles Wolff announced Tuesday morning.
Lanier, a former major-league player and manager, has been re-signed to manage the Champions.
He enters his 26th season as a professional baseball manager in 2018, bringing a wealth of experience in pro ball. The veteran skipper managed the Houston Astros from 1986 to 1988.
He won the National League’s manager of the year award in 1986, after guiding the Astros to a NL West championship before bowing out in the league’s championship series.
Lanier, who will turn 76 during the 2018 season, says his passion for baseball hasn’t hindered in the past couple seasons, which was ultimately his main reason for wanting to return to the roll.
“Bottom line is I still love the game,” Lanier said. “I’m very thankful that Miles (Wolff) and the organization want me to come back for another year.”
“I really love the city of Ottawa and the people have been very supportive.”
The Champions posted a record of 42-56 under Lanier in 2017, which Lanier says prompted him to continue the job where he left off last year.
“I wasn’t very happy with the way last year went on the field,” Lanier explained. “It left me wanting to come back and finish what we started.”
Lanier arrived in Boca Raton, Fla. Monday, where he will spend the winter months scouting at baseball camps. He meets with first base coach Jared Lemieux and hitting coach Sebastien Boucher soon to discuss player moves.
“There is going to be turnover – there always is in independent baseball,” the manager assured.
He’s waiting to hear from some teams from outside the Can-Am League on some potential early off-season deals, as transaction season looms around the independent baseball loop.
