Champions swing deal for base stealer
INF Coco Johnson had 57 stolen bases with Windy City (Frontier) last season.
OTTAWA – While the winter weather in Ottawa may warrant some hot coco, the Champions got a Coco of their own when they completed another trade Friday.
Ottawa acquired speedy INF COCO JOHNSON from the Frontier League’s Windy City ThunderBolts, in exchange for a PTNBL.
Johnson played each of the last three seasons in Windy City, where he showed off impressive speed on the bases. He stole 57 bases in a ThunderBolts uniform last year, while hitting .297 with seven home runs and 48 RBI.
Champions manager Hal Lanier is excited to see Johnson in action on the base paths, and has heard many sing his praises over the course of the offseason.
“He can steal bases,” Lanier said of his new acquisition. “I’ve had many different people around the Frontier League tell me about how quick he is.”
The Berrien Springs, Mich. native is a former farmhand of the Miami Marlins. He played in various tiers of A-ball after being selected by Miami in the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft.
The trade is Ottawa’s second interleague trade with a franchise from the Frontier League this offseason, after they made a deal for RHP JORDAN KUROKAWA weeks ago.
