Champions Sign Canadian Marcellus, Release Coker

2017 August 08

Ottawa, ON – The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have signed Ottawa area native IF AUSTIN MARCELLUS and released IF JASON COKER.

MARCELLUS, 24, spent the 2017 season in the Pecos League with the California City Whiptails where he hit .353 with four homeruns and 38 RBI in 61 games.

“I’m kinda still in shock,” said Marcellus. “Playing in front of the home crowd has been one of my goals since starting professional baseball so I’m excited.

“Playing every day is a different grind compared to college. You have to have a short memory.”

The Ingleside, ON native played his college baseball at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC and played for the Capital City Reds in 2015.

He became the first Capital City Reds alumni to sign a professional contract when he joined California City for the 2017 season.

COKER, 28, was signed on August 6th after IF Ryan Brockett announced his retirement and was 0-for-2 with a walk in his only game.

The Ottawa resident slashed .239/.362/.261 with seven RBI in 24 games for the Champions in 2016 after being signed out of the open tryout camp.
