Champions drop slugfest 18-8 to Miners
Augusta, New Jersey – The Sussex County Miners (7-2) tie a club record with an 18-8 win over the Ottawa Champions (4-5) on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Stadium.
Ottawa trailed 4-0 early as Sussex County rallied for four runs on three extra base hits in the third inning. DK Carey led off the inning with a triple and Angel Reyes and Jarred Maderos followed with back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Champions lineup immediately flashed some of their offensive prowess in the top of the fourth. Jordan Caillouet opened the scoring for Ottawa with a no-out bases-loaded sac fly, scoring Jiandido Tromp. An error and two RBI singles and the Champions evened the score at 4-4.
Ottawa took a brief lead before Sussex County returned with 14 runs over three innings to finish the game. The Miners’ offensive onslaught was led by Carey, who finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and a home run shy of the cycle.
After a stellar debut at home earlier in the week, Champions starting pitcher Jared Mortensen (Loss, 1-1) threw six innings, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits. Apart from two innings of trouble, Mortensen took control of the Miners, striking out seven with no walks.
Leonardo Reginatto (3-for-5) extended his hit streak to six games and Caillouet finished the game with two RBI to lead the Ottawa lineup. Catcher Chris Bosco also made his Champions pitching debut, coming on in relief in the eight inning.
Ottawa will look to split the series tomorrow afternoon as the team takes on Sussex County once again to conclude the four-game series and road trip. Jesse Lepore is set to make his second start of the season at 2:05 p.m.
