Champions break out bats in series opener, beat Sussex County 7-4
2018 May 28
The Champions kicked off the series in Sussex County on a high note Friday night.
OTTAWA – A four-run first inning led the Ottawa Champions to an early lead, and they wouldn't look back. They held the lead for the duration of the contest, picking up a victory in their first road contest of the 2018 campaign.
The win improves Ottawa's record to about .500, now sitting at 4-3.
Jordan Caillouet got things started with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and it was his first big fly of the season. He now leads the team in RBI with seven.
Vinny Guglietti’s hot streak continues as he collected three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for Ottawa.
In a familiar fashion, Ottawa's starting pitching continued to deliver early in the season. Austin Chrismon (W, 1-0) pitched well as he allowed 9 hits and 3 earned runs over five innings as he picked up the win. Corey Jones (L, 0-1) allowed six runs, four earned over five innings.
Christian Correa had a two run double for Sussex County. The Miners committed four errors in the field as they now have a league leading 19 errors on the season.
The bullpen allowed just one run as Miles Sheehan and Evan Rutckyjpitched effective frames and Scott Maine converted his third save in three opportunities. He’s yet to allow a run with the Champions.
Steve Nyisztor added some insurance for Ottawa as he drove in Coco Johnson in the top half of the ninth to extend the lead to 7-3.
Ottawa will try to win their third in a row as the second of a three game set goes tomorrow just after 6 p.m. The game can be found on Can Am TV. Steve Borkowski will take the mound for the Champions and Tyler Alexander will be on the bump for Sussex County.
