Champions at the Pan-Ams: Rutckyj strikes out one in relief as Canada defeats Colombia 10-3
Lima, Peru - Steve Brown didn't get a chance at payback against Evan Rutckyj, Phillippe Aumont and Team Canada, as he was held out of the lineup in Team Colombia's 10-3 loss on Thursday.
Interestingly enough, Canada beat Colombia 10-3 in the preliminary round the last time these two teams met in 2015 in Toronto as well.
Aumont also did not play, as Scott Richmond got the start on the mound for Canada. The former Toronto Blue Jay, who currently plays for the Can-Am League's Québec Capitales, struck out five batters over seven innings, allowing two earned runs with no walks to earn the win.
Evan Rutckyj came into the game with a five-run lead, so he was not credited with a save. Rutckyj struck out one batter, walked another and allowed one earned run in one inning pitched.
With the win, Canada remains undefeated with a 3-0 record heading into the Super Round while Colombia drops to 2-1.
Canada's next opponent is yet to be determined and will be the #1 seed in Group A. That team could be one of Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic or Nicaragua, although Nicaragua would need to score many runs to launch themselves into first in their group. If Puerto Rico defeats the Dominican Republic later this afternoon, that would improve their record to 3-0 and put them in the #1 seed.
Colombia will also play one of the three aforementioned teams, also depending on how this afternoon's games shake out.
