Brown snaps Champions skid with walk-off single

2018 August 31

The win snaps Ottawa’s eight-game losing skid, and gives them their 40th win of the season.

OTTAWA –  A two-run home run from INF Vinny Guglietti tied the game, then OF Steve Brown sent Ottawa Champions fans home happy in extra innings. He hit a walk-off single to left field, winning the game for the Champions in the 10th inning.

“That was exciting, especially to come out on top,” said Champions third base coach Jared Lemieux after the game. “We didn’t let the mistakes we made get to us too much, and we kept grinding and working hard.”
Lemieux was the acting manager for the Champions, with manager Hal Lanier unavailable due to illness.
Rockland began the game on top, scoring the first two runs in the top of the second inning. INF Mikael Mogues scorched a looping double into left-centre field, away from the diving OF Chase Harris to make the score 2-0.
The game remained that way for the vast majority of the contest, until Guglietti’s swing changed the face of the game in the eighth. With INF Daniel Bick on first base, Guglietti drilled his ninth home run of the season over the right field fence.
That was all the Champions needed to send the game into extra innings, and they delivered with Brown’s walk-off single.
RHP Steve Borkowski got the nod on the mound, and didn’t allow an earned run through six innings in his final outing of the season. He was tagged for five hits, but just one walk and struck out four.
The Champions bullpen also held their ground in relief, with LHP Scott Mainethrowing two solid innings in a high-pressure situation late in the ballgame. He came in for the ninth and tenth, allowing just one hit in that span.

The Champions wrap up their season this weekend, culminating with EXPOS DAY on Monday, September 3! Come out to cheer on Bill Spaceman Lee, as he plays DH in the Ottawa lineup for the Labour Day season finale.
